  Namche Automatic Weather Station

An Automatic Weather Station (AWS) is located in Namche (3,570 m a.s.l.) in the Khumbu Valley.

The meteorological station is part of a network of 6 Automatic Weather Stations (AWSs) installed over the past 10 years in the area of Sagarmatha National Park.

The network takes hourly measurements of seven standard parameters: temperature, relative humidity, atmospheric pressure, wind speed and direction, global radiation, total precipitation.

Purpose

Meteo-climatic observations in this area are very important for the study of the environmental changes that are affecting this ecosystem, helping the scientific community to improve the prediction of the evolution of this environmental phenomena and modification.

The AWS in Namche Bazar is reference stations in CEOP (Coordinated Energy and Water Cycle Observation Project) under the WMO’s initiative World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) – Global Energy and Water cycle Experiment (WCRP-GEWEX).

The technologically advanced AWS instrumentation is developed by the

Italian manufacturer LSI-Lastem.

The AWS guarantee continuous measurements of air temperature, relative humidity, atmospheric pressure, global solar radiation, UVA radiation, wind speed and direction.
