  South Col Ultrasonic Anemometer WMT700

During the 2011 expedition, a prototype replaces the sensor installed during 2008 expedition. A prototype (LSI-Lastem) to support with other two sensors manufactured by VAISALA: WMT700 and WA15D7B. The WMT700 sensor is a robust and reliable ultrasonic anemometer. It measures surface wind, which is one of the key parameters for meteorology and aviation. Purpose
The WMT700 series uses ultrasound to determine horizontal wind speed and direction. The WMT700 Series meets the updated - WMO-No.8 guide, 7th edition - and ICAO requirements. Measurements from this unique meteorological observatory can provide important information for the scientific community for several application, including weather forecasting and study related to the understanding climate change. The South Col station is an important achievement for mountaineering and for science. It is an exceptional point of weather ob servation, which provides important and unique meteorological data. Integrated within the SHARE network in the Khumbu Valley, comprised of seven stations between 2,660 m (8,727 ft.) and 5,079 m (16,663 ft.), it will surely improve our studies of atmospheric circulation, particularly regarding the exchange of air masses between the troposphere and stratosphere and the thermal gradient.

Statement

In 2008 at South Col the CombiSD DNA022 sensor (LSI-Lastem, Italy) was installed. During the 2011 expedition, this sensor was replaced with a prototype (LSI-Lastem) to support with other two sensors manufactured by VAISALA: WMT700 and WA15D7B. The WMT700 sensor is a robust and reliable ultrasonic anemometer. It measures surface wind, which is one of the key parameters for meteorology and aviation. The WMT700 series uses ultrasound to determine horizontal wind speed and direction. The measurement is based on transit time, the time it takes for the ultrasound to travel from one transducer to another, depending on the wind speed. The transit time is measured in both directions for a pair of transducer heads. Using two measurements for each of the three ultrasonic paths at 60° angles to each other, the WMT700 computes the wind speed and direction. The wind measurement is calculated in a way that completely eliminates the effects of altitude, temperature and humidity.

WMT700 Technical characteristic:

Wind Speed

Measurement range: uo to 75 m/s

Accuracy: +/- 0.2 m/s or 3 % of reading, whichever is greater

Starting threshold: 0.01 m/s

Resolution: 0.01 m/s

Wind direction

Measurement range: 0 to 360°

Accuracy: ±2°

Starting threshold: 0.1 m/s

Resolution: 1°
