  Carbon monoxide

Measurements of trace gas concentration carbon monoxide (CO) by using a customized Gas Chromotograph-RGB.

Measurements started on Jan 2007 with a modified version of a commercial RGD2-Trace Analytical analyser. Measurements ended on March 2010.

Purpose

CO plays an important role in the oxidation/reduction chemistry of the atmosphere.

Therefore, the distributions and trends of CO are key variables to our understanding of the Earth's present and future atmosphere.

Carbon monoxide has an indirect radiative forcing effect by elevating concentrations of methane and tropospheric ozone through chemical reactions with other atmospheric constituents (e.g., the hydroxyl radical OH) that would otherwise destroy them. Through natural processes in the atmosphere, it is eventually oxidized to carbon dioxide.

Statement

The instrument is a gas-chromatograph equipped with an RGD detector.

The instrument is running continuously.

In Sampling and Analysis Frequency the high flux of real air continuosly flow through the sampling line and every 30 minutes a portion is splitted for 3 minutes to the gas-chromatograph sampling loop.

Description of Instruments:

time resolution: 1 measurement every 30 minutes;

sensitivity: +- 1 ppb

detection limit: 10 ppb

measurements range: 1 - 10^3 (10 ppb - 10 ppm)

Time zone Local time UTC+1

Processing/Calibration:

-Current Scale: indirect link to NOAA 2004 scale

-Scale and Calibration (traceability): reference standard are real air pumped in Luxfer Scott Marrin cylinders and calibrated at MPI-Jena against NOAA cylinders.

-Measurement Calibration: every 15 minutes a sample is analyzed alternating between real air and reference standard in order to correct for short time instrumental drifts.

Molar fraction is calculated from the ratio of the peak heights and than corrected for non linearity of the detector.
