  Askole SHARE-BOX

A new embedded-transportable monitoring system (SHARE-BOX), specifically designed to perform atmospheric observations in remote regions, has been deployed at Askole from 20th August to 10th November 2012.

The system was equipped with an integrated weather station (Vaisala WXT 520), condensation particle counter (CPC - TSI 3010) able to provide total number concentration for particles with diameters 15 nm < Dp < 3 micron, ozone analyser (Ozone Monitor 220 2B Technologies) and a probe for carbon dioxide measurements (Vaisala CARBOCA GMP 343).

The embedded station used during the Askole field campaign has been tested during a 10-day period at the Monte Cimone WMO/GAW Global Station (CMN; 44.10N, 10.70E; 2165 m a.s.l.), in January 2011. At CMN, the routine measurement programmes for the continuous determination of aerosol particle number concentration (Np) and ozone mixing ratio are performed in the framework of ACTRIS (www.actris.eu) and WMO/GAW programmes, for which data quality is well assessed (Asmi et al., 2011; Zellweger et al., 2012). Unfortunately no CO2 measurements were available at CMN during the intercomparison period. During this test, in the case of RH<100%, the maximum difference between the observations at CMN and those performed by the embedded system did not exceed 20% for particle number and 15% for ozone.

The temperature in the instrumented box is controlled by a heat-pipe system exchanging heat with the battery unit and maintaining temperature conditions suited for operating the instruments.

• Sampling of aerosol and gases is performed through a common stainless-steel inlet working at approximately 2 l/min. The inlet efficiency at low wind-speed (3 m/s) is calculated to be close to 80% for 1µm - particle. For higher wind-speed, lower efficiency is expected due to inlet geometry and flow-rate. If we assume that particles with Dp <150 nm account for the majority of particle number concentration, as observed at the high altitude site of the Nepal Climate Observatory – Pyramid (NCO-P, 5079 m asl, Nepal; see Sellegri et al., 2010), potential loss of large particle should not affect particle number in a significant way.
