  South Col Relative Humidity

During the 2011, at South Col was installed two DMA672 termohygrometers and one DMA033 thermometer. All these sensors are manufactered by LSI-Lastem (Italy). DMA 672 thermohygrometer is an instrument for measuring temperature and relative humidity and suitable for a continuous measurement in severe environments; in presence of deep thermal and hygrometric ranges with high sun radiant heat. The parameters are recorded every ten minutes and data are transmitted hourly to a server at the Pyramid Laboratory-Observatory (5,050 m a.s.l., near Lobuche in Nepal’s Khumbu Valley), and from there to Ev-K2-CNR headquarters in Italy.

Purpose

The DMA 672 thermohygrometers measures :

- Air temperature[°C];

- Relative Humidity[%];

Measurements from this unique meteorological observatory can provide important information for the scientific community for several application, including weather forecasting and study related to the understanding climate change. The South Col station is an important achievement for mountaineering and for science. It is an exceptional point of weather observation, which provides important and unique meteorological data. Integrated within the SHARE network in the Khumbu Valley, comprised of seven stations between 2,660 m (8,727 ft.) and 5,079 m (16,663 ft.), it will surely improve our studies of atmospheric circulation, particularly regarding the exchange of air masses between the troposphere and stratosphere and the thermal gradient.

Statement

In 2008 expedition, at South Col was installed the DMA572 termohygrometer, that was replaced during the 2011 expedition with two DMA672 termohygrometers and one DMA033 thermometer. All these sensors are manufactered by LSI-Lastem (Italy).

DMA 672 thermohygrometer is an instrument for measuring temperature and relative humidity and suitable for a continuous measurement in severe environments; in presence of deep thermal and hygrometric ranges with high sun radiant heat.

An important feature of this set of sensor is that the thermohygrometric sensitive element is easily replaceable, in order to have a simple and rapid ordinary maintenance and avoiding calibration. The Thermohygrometer has supported a considerable improvement, owing to a deep technical and styling development process: a fan ensures a continuos air change around the sensor in order to eliminate temperature fault caused by radiant heat.
