- Purpose
- Optical particle counter (particle counting with the method of orthogonal light scattering) are widely used to measure particle size and numbers of ambient aerosols. This new instrument is continuous measuring the total amount of particles in the ambient air. Then the detected particles are classified according to their size in 31 different size channels.

- Statement
- The OPC - GRIMM 190 is a Continuous Ambient Aerosol Spectrometer able to measure simultaneously the number and size distribution of ambient aerosol in 31 channels, ranging from 0.25 to 30µm. An Optical particle counter (particle counting with the method of orthogonal light scattering) are widely used to measure particle size and numbers of ambient aerosols. This instrument continuous measuring the total amount of particles in the ambient air. Then the detected particles are classified according to their size in 31 different size channels. The result is a real time aerosol spectrum of the sampled air. With a PC/Windows based software the measured size distribution can be displayed on a monitor. For a better visualisation of the data, a selection of up to 16 of the 31 channels can be displayed at the same time. The monitoring activity in the shelter-laboratory is completely realized using renewable energy from 112 photovoltaic panels and this permit to minimize the possible influence of local emissions and guarantee air mass sampling in clean conditions. The energy produced by photovoltaic panels is stocked by 120 electric storage cells, lodged on the shelf in the behind part of the shelter. The inverters will guarantee the current stabilisation. A dedicated satellite connection permits near-real-time data transfer, as well as the remote control of instrumentation. Computers in the laboratory are connected with the server located in the Pyramid International Laboratory, using a coupled optical fibre and a wireless connection. The server Himalaya server is linked to another server located at ISAC-CNR Institute in Bologna (Italy). Quality control for instrumentation and data reduction will be performed according to EUSAAR/GAW/AGAGE procedures for aerosols and gases.
