  South Col Broad band radiometer

Both in 2008 and in 2011 expedition a DPA 007, manufactured by LSI-Lastem was installed at South Col. This broad band radiometers measure electromagnetic radiation intensity in a determined interval of wavelength. Applications often need information about emission in ultraviolet, infrared, and visible spectral band, demanding a more specialized instrumentation.

Purpose

The DPA 007, manufactured by LSI-Lastem is used to measure:

- UVA radiation[W m-2]

This model permit to record UVA radiation and work according to the the WMO (World Meteorological Organization) guideline. Measurements from this unique meteorological observatory can provide important information for the scientific community for several application, including weather forecasting and study related to the understanding climate change. The South Col station is an important achievement for mountaineering and for science. It is an exceptional point of weather observation, which provides important and unique meteorological data. Integrated within the SHARE network in the Khumbu Valley, comprised of seven stations between 2,660 m (8,727 ft.) and 5,079 m (16,663 ft.), it will surely improve our studies of atmospheric circulation, particularly regarding the exchange of air masses between the troposphere and stratosphere and the thermal gradient.

In particular, this model permit to record UVA radiation and work according to the the WMO (World Meteorological Organization) guideline.

The sensitive element is a photodiode with optical filter with interferential deposition in order to improve the spectral transmission.
