- Purpose
- Continuous O3 observations at the Nepal Climate Observatory - Pyramid (NCO-P, 5079ma.s.l., Nepal) with the aim of contributing to clarifying the role played by transport processes in determining the O3 levels and variability in one of the world’s most critical high-altitude regions, a systematic assessment was performed of the influence of SI on O3 concentrations recorded at this GAW-WMO station, which is considered representative of the Southern Himalayas remote troposphere. As O3 is a powerful greenhouse gases and a dangerous pollutant and due to the increasing emissions of anthropogenic O3 precursors over South Asia, such activity appears to be particularly important also considering that this region is strongly influenced by one of the so-called Atmospheric Brown Clouds, with severe implications on regional climate, air-quality and food security.

- Measure description
- Range (he analyzer uses the principle of ultraviolet absorption; whereby ozone molecules absorb ultraviolet energy at a known wave length of 254nm. The UV light available for detection is proportional to the amount of ozone in the sample chamber.
- Statement
- Continuous O3 observations at the Nepal Climate Observatory - Pyramid (NCO-P, 5079ma.s.l., Nepal) GAW-WMO station. The measurement method used is Light absorption analysis (UV): Air sampling observation. The air is sampled by a 1m long intake at 3.5 m height above the ground. The air intake is a inox-steel pipe. A Teflon sampling line (lenght 1.5m) connects the air intake with the analyser. Data are first stored on a 1-minute basis and finally validated as 30-minute average values. The sampling methodology was based on the GAW-WMO requirements (GAW, 1992). The ozone measurement is usually expressed as mixing ratio, which requires a measure of the temperature and pressure within the sample chamber. Ozone monitors usually include these measurements and do the mixing ratio calculation automatically. The data are normally submitted as 30 minutes averages and deposited into the WDCSO at NILU, usually once a month.
