Namche Station is part of the station network of automated measurement stations (AWSs) that were installed in the Eastern Himalayas: the AWSs are located at different altitudes, over a stretch oriented approximately 40 km south to north. The network takes hourly measurements of seven standard parameters: temperature, relative humidity, atmospheric pressure, wind speed and direction, global radiation, total precipitation. Meteo-climatic observations in this area are very important for the study of the environmental changes that are affecting this ecosystem, helping the scientific community to improve the prediction of the evolution of this environmental phenomena and modification. This station is reference point within the CEOP-High Elevation (CEOP-HE) initiative, promoted in order to investigate possible changes of hydrological and energy cycles in high elevation regions and to better elucidate the role of mountains within the climate system from a local to global scales. The stations in Nepal and Pakistan are Reference Stations in the CEOP project under the WMO’s World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) – Global Energy and Water cycle Experiment (GEWEX) initiative. Ev-K2-CNR recently founded a special interest group called “CEOP-High Elevation” (CEOP-HE), which is dedicated to understanding multi-scale variability and change in hydrological and energy cycles in high elevation regions and studying their role within the climate system on a local and global scale. The atmospheric pressure on a given surface is the force per unit area exerted by virtue of the weight of the atmosphere above. The pressure is thus equal to the weight of a vertical column of air above a horizontal projection of the surface, extending to the outer limit of the atmosphere. Analysed pressure fields are a fundamental requirement of the science of meteorology. It is imperative that these pressure fields be accurately defined as they form the basis for all subsequent predictions of the state of the atmosphere. Pressure measurements must be as accurate as technology will allow, within realistic financial constraints, and there must be uniformity in the measurement and calibration procedures across national boundaries. The level of accuracy needed for pressure measurements to satisfy the requirements of various meteorological applications has been identified by the respective WMO commission. The requirements are as follows: Measuring range: 500 – 1 080 hPa (both station pressure and mean sea-level pressure) Required target uncertainty: 0.1 hPa Reporting resolution: 0.1 hPa Sensor time constant: 20 s Output averaging time: 1 min At the AWS Namche station the CX115P Lsi-Lastem barometer is connected with measurement system (recorder, data logger) that accepts analog signals. The barometer functions according to the piezometric principle: a resistive film is deposited on a slice of silica with a bridge form; as the pressure changes, the slice will deform and consequently changes the system's resistance. The CX115P model mounts a special thermal compensation system that significantly reduces drift.
