  Automatic Weather Station

The Vaisala WXT520 multi-parameter weather transmitter is a compact and lightweight multi-sensor instrument that measures the most essential weather parameters. The Meteorological parameters measured are: Air temperature, Atmospheric pressure, Relative humidity, Wind speed and direction, Precipitation.

Lineage
An automatic weather station (AWS) is defined as a “meteorological station at which observations are made and transmitted automatically” (WMO, 1992a). At an AWS, the instrument measurements are read out or received by a central data-acquisition unit. The collected data from the autonomous measuring devices can be processed locally at the AWS or elsewhere, for example, at the central processor of the network (WMO, 1989a). Automatic weather stations may be designed as an integrated concept of various measuring devices in combination with the data-acquisition and processing units. Such a combined system of instruments, interfaces and processing and transmission units is usually called an automated weather observing system (AWOS) or automated surface observing system (ASOS). It has become common practice to refer to such a system as an AWS, although it is not a “station” fully in line with the stated definition. Specific software routines are incorporated in the application software allowing field maintenance and calibration. In general, maintenance and calibration is conducted in an offline mode of operation, temporarily interrupting the normal station operation. A VAISALA WXT510 meteorological unit, measuring temperature, pressure, relative humidity, rain, wind intensity and direction. The wind data measurements utilise three equally spaced ultrasonic transducers that determine the wind speed and direction from the time it takes for ultrasound to travel from one transducer to the two others. The precipitation is measured with a piezoelectrical sensor that detects the impact of individual raindrops and thus infers the accumulated rainfall. For the pressure, temperature and humidity measurements, separate sensors employing high precision RC oscillators are used.
