  South Col Wind direction

In 2008 at South Col the CombiSD DNA022 sensor (LSI-Lastem, Italy) was installed.

During the 2011 expedition, this sensor was replaced with a prototype (LSI-Lastem) to support with other two sensors manufactured by VAISALA: WMT700 and WA15D7B.

The CombiSD combines sensors for measuring both wind speed and direction in a single instrument.

Purpose

Measurements from this unique meteorological observatory can provide important information for the scientific community for several application, including weather forecasting and study related to the understanding climate change.

The South Col station is an important

achievement for mountaineering and for science.

It is an exceptional point of weather ob servation,

which provides important and unique meteorological data.

Integrated within the SHARE network in

the Khumbu Valley, comprised of seven stations between 2,660 m (8,727 ft.) and 5,079 m (16,663

ft.), it will surely improve our studies of atmospheric circulation, particularly regarding the exchange of air masses between the troposphere and stratosphere and the thermal gradient.

Statement
The CombiSD sensor includes, in a single apparatus, the transducers for measuring wind speed and direction. Its use simplifies the installation and the plant design in respect of the systems with separate units plus giving some other advantages being smaller, lighter and cheaper. The CombiSD sensor is available in different versions: DNA021-022: sensors with direct signal output. Frequency (Hz) for wind speed and resistance (Ohm) for wind direction. These sensors are suitable to acquisition systems, like LSI-Lastem ones, recognising and managing this kind of electric signals DNA022: low power consumption is thought for systems with small energy available.
