  Global pyranometer

In the framework of the SusKat (Sustainable Atmosphere for the Kathmandu Valley), ABC-UNEP and NextData Projects, CNR-ISAC and URT Ev-K2-CNR participated in the setting-up of the Kathmandu (Pakanajol) monitoring station. In particular, the station is equipped with:

• meteorological sensors;

• global pyranometer for downward solar short-wave radiation;

• surface ozone analyzer;

• optical particle counter for aerosol size distribution from 0.3 to 10 micron;

• on-line PM1/PM10 analyser ;

• multi-angle absorption photometer for equivalent black carbon mass measurement.

Purpose
The aim of this air quality and climatic urban station will provide complementary information to that of the NCO-P GAW-WMO Global Station, thus representing a reliable reference point for typical urban (and polluted) conditions in the Himalaya foothills, increasing basic knowledge on air pollution in the Kathmandu valley and its possible recirculation to the Himalayas and the free troposphere.

Statement

Data are daily checked by operators at ISAC-CNR in Bologna and validated year-by-year.

The instrumental set-up is composed by:

- Global Pyranometer (Kipp&Zonon, CMP21) measuring downward solar irradiance throughout the 305–2800 nm spectral range.

The solar irradiance and instrument body temperatures are acquired every 60 s. The CMP21 has a very good cosine responsivity (cosine error less than 0.4% for solar zenith angles smaller than 80°).

The temperature dependence is also small (less than 0.5% within the range -20÷+50 °C), and the spectral responsivity is uniform within the measurement range (95% points at 335–2200 nm).

The CMP21 was calibrated at Kipp&Zonen Laboratory based on the World Radiometric Reference of the WMO.

The estimated total uncertainty on hourly irradiance values is less than 2%.
